Weather in Punjabi: It's Cold, It's Raining, Snow, Heat and Every Season (With Gurmukhi)

By Simranjeet Aulakh·October 26, 2026·7 min read

Weather in Punjabi is mausam. It's cold is thand hai, it's hot is garmi hai, it's raining is meenh pai riha hai, it's snowing is baraf pai rahi hai. All the weather words and seasons with Gurmukhi and pronunciation, plus the small-talk lines Punjabi families actually use, in Brampton, Birmingham and Ludhiana alike.

"Weather" in Punjabi is mausam (ਮੌਸਮ). The lines you'll use most: Ajj bahut thand hai (ਅੱਜ ਬਹੁਤ ਠੰਢ ਹੈ, it's very cold today), Bahut garmi hai (ਬਹੁਤ ਗਰਮੀ ਹੈ, it's very hot), Meenh pai riha hai (ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, it's raining) and, for anyone in Canada, Baraf pai rahi hai (ਬਰਫ਼ ਪੈ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, it's snowing). Weather is the universal small talk on both sides of the Atlantic, and Punjabi grandparents treat a cold snap as a personal emergency, so this is vocabulary you'll hear every single day. Here are the words, the seasons and the phrases.

Weather Small Talk, Diaspora Edition

In Surrey, Southall and Sacramento the weather is how conversations start, and the Punjabi version has a few reliable moves. The opener is a statement plus haina?: "Ajj bahut thand hai, haina?" (it's really cold today, isn't it?). The reply agrees and escalates: "Haan ji, haddaan vich vadd gayi" (yes, it's got into my bones). Grandparents add the instruction: "Topi paa ke jaayin" (go with your hat on). And every Punjabi abroad has said, at least once, "Pind vich hun vadhiya mausam hovega" — the weather will be lovely in the village right now.
