House and Home Words in Punjabi: Rooms, Furniture, Kitchen and the Phrases You Hear at Home
House is ghar, room is kamra, kitchen is rasoi, bathroom is gusalkhana, door is darwaza or booha, window is bari, bed is manja or palang. Seventy home words with Gurmukhi and pronunciation — rooms, furniture, things around the house — plus the household commands every Punjabi kid grows up hearing: darwaza band kar, batti bujha de, chaabi kithe hai.
"House" and "home" are both ghar (ਘਰ) in Punjabi. A room is a kamra (ਕਮਰਾ), the kitchen is the rasoi (ਰਸੋਈ), the bathroom is the gusalkhana (ਗ਼ੁਸਲਖ਼ਾਨਾ), a door is a darwaza (ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ) or, in proper Punjabi, a booha (ਬੂਹਾ), a window is a bari (ਬਾਰੀ) and a bed is a manja (ਮੰਜਾ) if it's the woven kind or a palang (ਪਲੰਘ) if it isn't. Home is where most Punjabi is actually spoken, so these are the words — and the commands: darwaza band kar, batti bujha de, jutti baahar laah — that every diaspora kid has heard ten thousand times without ever seeing them written down.

Two Homes: Peke and Sohre
Punjabi has special words for a married woman's two homes: peke (ਪੇਕੇ), her parents' house, and sohre (ਸੌਹਰੇ), her in-laws' house — "main pekeyan gayi haan" (I've gone to my parents') needs no further explanation to any Punjabi. A husband's home is also sohra ghar, and the village one's family comes from is simply pind, even three generations into Canada. See family words in Punjabi.
