Reading sihari after the letter it's written before, saying the silent a at the end of ਘਰ, missing the addak in ਪੱਕਾ, ignoring the tone in ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ, mixing up look-alikes like ਸ and ਮ, ਖ and ਥ, ਢ and ਵ: the ten mistakes nearly every Gurmukhi beginner makes, with the fix, memory tricks and a 20-word practice set.
Once you know the 35 letters, the same ten mistakes slow down almost every Gurmukhi learner: reading sihari in the wrong place, pronouncing the silent a at the end of words, skipping the addak that doubles a consonant, ignoring the tones hidden in ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ, confusing the look-alike letters (ਸ/ਮ, ਖ/ਥ, ਫ/ਕ, ਢ/ਵ), mixing up the vowel carriers, mishandling the nasal marks, misreading a mid-word ਹ, missing the tiny subjoined letters, and freezing on English loanwords. Each one has a simple fix. Here they are in the order you'll meet them, with a 20-word test at the end.
1. Reading Sihari in the Wrong Place
The mistake: seeing ਿ to the left of a letter and pronouncing the i first — reading ਸਿੱਖ as "isakh". The fix: sihari is written before but pronounced after; treat ਸਿ, ਦਿ, ਮਿ as single units. ਸਿੱਖ sikh, ਦਿਲ dil, ਪਿੰਡ pind, ਮਿੱਠਾ mittha. Full detail in Gurmukhi vowel signs explained.
2. Pronouncing the Silent "a" at the End of a Word
The mistake: ਘਰ read as "ghara", ਨਾਮ as "naama", ਸਿੰਘ as "singha". The fix: the built-in a of a word's last consonant is silent: ghar, naam, singh. It comes back when a suffix follows — ਘਰਾਂ gharaan (homes) — and the final vowel is sounded when it's written with a sign: ਰੋਟੀ roti, ਕੁੜੀ kudi.
3. Skipping the Addak
The mistake: ignoring the small ੱ above a letter, so ਪੱਕਾ and ਪਕਾ sound the same. The fix: addak doubles the consonant after it — hold it a beat. The pairs are real words:
| Without addak | Meaning | With addak | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ਪਕਾ paka | cook! | ਪੱਕਾ pakka | firm, ripe, certain |
| ਪਤਾ pata | address; to know | ਪੱਤਾ patta | leaf |
| ਸਤ sat | truth (as in Sat Sri Akaal) | ਸੱਤ satt | seven |
| ਕਲਾ kala | art | ਕੱਲਾ kalla | alone |
| ਬਚਾ bacha | save! | ਬੱਚਾ bachcha | child |
4. Ignoring the Tones in ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ
The mistake: reading ਘ as a breathy "gh" because that's how it's transliterated, so ਘਰ comes out as Hindi ghar instead of Punjabi kàr. The fix: at the start of a word these five letters are plain k, ch, ṭ, t, p with a low tone; ਹ in the middle of a word is a high tone (ਚਾਹ cháa). It's the difference between sounding like a textbook and sounding like family — see Punjabi tones explained.
5. Mixing Up the Look-Alike Letters
| Pair | Sounds | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|---|
| ਸ / ਮ | s / m | ਮ (m) has a closed loop on the right; ਸ (s) is open |
| ਖ / ਥ | kh / th | ਖ has a hook that opens left; ਥ is a closed, rounder shape |
| ਫ / ਕ | ph / k | ਫ has a tail that drops below the line; ਕ doesn't |
| ਢ / ਵ | ḍh / v | ਢ has a small inner hook; ਵ is a plain open loop |
| ਨ / ਲ | n / l | ਲ has a tail curling under; ਨ sits flat |
| ਯ / ਪ | y / p | ਯ has a loop at the left foot; ਪ is a simple arch |
| ਟ / ਠ | ṭ / ṭh | ਠ is a closed circle; ਟ is open at the bottom |
| ਧ / ਪ | dh / p | ਧ has an extra loop inside the arch |
| ਘ / ਪ | gh / p | ਘ has a tail hooking back under the arch |
The fix: drill each pair side by side rather than learning them in alphabet order, and write them — the hand remembers a loop the eye skips.
6. Confusing the Vowel Carriers ੳ, ਅ, ੲ
The mistake: reading ਇ (i) as ਏ (e), or ਉ (u) as ਓ (o). The fix: the carrier tells you the family, the sign tells you the vowel — ੲ carries i, ee, e (ਇ ਈ ਏ), ੳ carries u, oo, o (ਉ ਊ ਓ), ਅ carries a, aa, ai, au (ਅ ਆ ਐ ਔ). ਇੱਥੇ itthe (here) vs ਏਥੇ ethe (also "here", a different spelling), ਉਹ oh (that) vs ਓਹ (the same word in older spelling).
7. Mishandling Bindi and Tippi
The mistake: either dropping the nasal entirely (ਮਾਂ as "ma") or turning it into a hard n (ਹਾਂ as "haan" with the tongue hitting the roof of the mouth). The fix: before a consonant the mark is a real nasal consonant — ਪੰਜ panj, ਸਿੰਘ singh, ਲੰਗਰ langar; at the end of a word it just nasalises the vowel, like French bon — ਮਾਂ mã, ਹਾਂ hã, ਨਹੀਂ nahĩ.
8. Reading a Mid-Word ਹ as "h"
The mistake: ਸ਼ਹਿਰ read as "sha-hir", ਕਹਿਣਾ as "ka-hi-na". The fix: after a vowel, ਹ becomes a high tone, and a sihari after it sounds like e: ਸ਼ਹਿਰ shehar, ਕਹਿਣਾ kehna, ਰਹਿਣਾ rehna, ਮਹਿੰਗਾ mehnga, ਪਹਿਲਾਂ pehlaan, ਬਹੁਤ bahut (said báut). At the start of a word ਹ is a normal h: ਹੱਥ, ਹਾਂ.
9. Missing the Subjoined Letters
The mistake: not noticing the tiny ੍ਹ, ੍ਰ or ੍ਵ tucked under a letter, so ਪ੍ਰੀਤ becomes "peet" and ਪੜ੍ਹ becomes "paṛ". The fix: look under the line. ੍ਰ adds an r (ਪ੍ਰੀਤ preet, ਸ੍ਰੀ sri, ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਦ prashad); ੍ਹ adds a high tone (ਪੜ੍ਹ páṛ, ਕੱਲ੍ਹ káll); ੍ਵ adds a v (mostly in Gurbani).
10. Freezing on English Loanwords
The mistake: sounding out ਸਕੂਲ or ਡਾਕਟਰ letter by letter and not recognising the result. The fix: read it aloud quickly — sa-kool, daak-tar, kai-ne-daa, ing-laind, tai-lee-vi-zhan, bus, kaar — and the English word appears. Punjabi spells loanwords by ear, with ਵ for both v and w (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ Waheguru) and ਸ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ for sh, z, f, often without the dots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is sihari written before the consonant in Gurmukhi?
It's a convention from older Indian scripts: the short i sign sits to the left of the consonant it follows in speech. Read the sign and the letter as one unit: ਸਿ is always si.
Is the last "a" pronounced in Gurmukhi words?
No — the built-in a of a word's final consonant is silent: ਘਰ is ghar, not "ghara". It is pronounced when a written vowel sign follows (ਕੁੜੀ kudi) or when a suffix is added (ਘਰਾਂ gharaan).
What does the addak do?
The addak (ੱ) doubles the consonant after it. It changes meaning: ਪਕਾ paka (cook) vs ਪੱਕਾ pakka (firm), ਸਤ sat (truth) vs ਸੱਤ satt (seven).
Which Gurmukhi letters look alike?
The usual confusions are ਸ/ਮ, ਖ/ਥ, ਫ/ਕ, ਢ/ਵ, ਨ/ਲ, ਯ/ਪ, ਟ/ਠ and ਧ/ਪ. Drill each pair side by side and write them by hand to fix the difference.
