The Grammar Hidden in the Titles

  • Doubling. Hass hass, kinni kinni, balle balle, lakh lakh vadhaaiyan — saying a word twice means "again and again" or "very".
  • Feminine and masculine. Kinni is feminine; the masculine is kinna. Sohni (beautiful, of a woman) becomes sohna for a man. Song titles are full of these pairs.
  • "Putting" a dance. In Punjabi you bhangra paunde, literally "put bhangra" — the verb pauna also gives boli pauni, to sing a folk couplet.
  • English made Punjabi. Laembadgini, rangroot, peg — Punjabi absorbs English words and bends them to its own sounds.

Read the Titles in Gurmukhi

Song titles are the best first words to read: short, familiar and already in your head. Try sounding out ਹੱਸ (h-a-ss, with the doubling sign addak ੱ), ਮੁੱਛ and ਕੁੜੀ (with the flapped ੜ that English doesn't have). Our Gurmukhi alphabet guide covers every letter, and reading Gurmukhi step by step takes you from letters to words.
